Herbert List was born in Hamburg in 1903. The son of a coffee trader, he was expected to take over his father's business. But, at 23, he went the opposite way and becamea surrealistic photographer influenced by Man Ray. He took magical photographs of still lifes and people (especially young men) in Greece, Italy, England and Germany. His fine art prints can be found in all the major photographic collections of the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Among them is the famous goldfish from Santurini.
